Here is the photo of our stool finally finished.
As you can see we chose to build our stool as a 3 legged stool rather that a 4 legged stool. This was for a number of reasons but mainly due to the fact that after speaking to the local fisherman and researching into stools ourselves we decided that a 3 legged stool would give a fisherman far more stability than a 4-legged stool.
The influences of Dungeness our shown in our stool through the chat we had with the fisherman whilst down there as well as this we also varnished the legs of the stool to give the appearance of the stripes on the lighthouse that can be seen from any part of the beach. As well as these two, the string which can be seen wrapped around the legs was picked up from dungeness and was not only used to strengthen the structure of the stool but was also made with the idea that it could be used as a shelf for a fisherman’s tackle box. This rope was also tied around the legs using the same knot that a fisherman would use when tying their floats and hooks to their line while preparing to fish.
The next stage from here is to complete the documentation video for our stool and then take our stool back to some fishing areas within London and try and get some images of some anglers using it.
For the Dungeness Project I have been working collaboratively with Jack Pearson.
Whilst in Dungeness we started talking to some of the fisherman who were down on the beach for the day. This was where are idea initially came from. Having both wanted to do something which incorporated working in the wood workshop we had decided we wanted to make a fisherman’s stool based on some of the main features of dungeness.
As we needed 3 outcomes to meet the criteria of the brief we decided the stool would be the first, and whilst making the stool we would also film what we were doing at each stage to make a short documentary of how we made it. The third outcome was either going to be a poster that showed how the stool fitted together or a selection of photos of the completed stool.
Images of our progress will follow shortly.
Having not done much of my own work recently I decided to try some screen printing. This is a design is a typographic map of Cornwall which I created while in college but thought i would go back to. Previously when i created this design it was for some postcards and used typefaces from the computer. But this time round I decided to do all the lettering free hand and at a much larger scale of A2. Here is the digital image of the design i have created. The Screen printed versions will be up shortly.
Here are all the photos I took whilst i was in Dungeness. I know its not many but i spent most of my time filming rather than taking photos.
For this project we had to visit Dungeness and explore the area. The aim was to make drawings, photographs, film, measurements and diagrams on the chosen area. This is to then be taken back to the studio and you are to produce a range of outcomes that communicate your findings. The should include 3 of the following:
Whilst in Dungeness I was able to take a selection of photos which will be on here shortly. As well as photos i was also able to capture some film with the intentions of making a short film on the area which will also be done shortly.
Studio on Fire
Recently I have been looking at a lot of the work of Studio on Fire letterpress. This has been both for my essay as well as my margate project.
Studio on Fire are a Design and Letterpress Workshop based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was founded in 1999 and began work as one small press in a basement. It has since gone from strength to strength and is now a 11 stung team with 10 presses in a proper studio workspace.
The reason I enjoy this form of letterpress printing is because by printing from the plastic blocks you are able to print fine imagery which the previous methods would not allow. I have been looking into printing using this method for my Margate project in which i intend to print some posters that somehow revolve around Margate. But the main aim of these posters is undecided so far.
I started looking at creating some collages for my margate project but i soon decided against this idea for my whole project as i wanted to create something using a method i had not previously used. So i am going to start looking towards doing something in letter press or screen print.
